ReceiptRoller 1.4.287 Release Notes

In this release, 1.4.287, we're introducing the Media Display feature for in-store Android devices, which we've been developing since the previous release, 1.4.282. It lets you loop images and video on in-store tablets and monitors, so you can run your own digital signage for product promotions, campaign announcements, and menu boards.

You can use the service here: https://receiptroller.io

What's new in this release

Media Display feature now available

You can now manage in-store Android devices from the ReceiptRoller admin screen and loop images and video by campaign. From creative management and campaign creation to distribution scheduling and playback tracking, everything you need to run digital signage is in place.

  • Pair an Android device in one minute — clicking "Add display" in the admin screen issues a 6-digit code. Just enter the code in the dedicated Android app and pairing is complete. Managing multiple devices at once is also supported
  • Campaign creation — group related creatives, such as "Summer new products" or "Real-time announcements," into a campaign. You can reuse creatives already uploaded and approved through the existing creative management feature as-is
  • Fine-grained distribution scheduling — create "placements" within a campaign to set the distribution target (all displays / specific displays / specific stores), day of week, time window, and date range. For example, you can run "weekday lunchtime 11-14: Store A only" or "Saturdays after 17:00: all stores"
  • Playback ratio control via weighting — when multiple campaigns run on the same display, you can assign a weight (1-10) to each placement to adjust the playback ratio. Give a higher weight to the announcement you want to prioritize, and it plays back proportionally more often
  • Automatic online/offline status display — check the last heartbeat from each device right in the admin screen. A device shows online if it checked in within the last 5 minutes, offline after that — handy for monitoring whether installed devices are up and running
  • Automatic playback reporting — Android devices automatically send playback records for each creative to the server, recording cumulative and completed playback counts per campaign. It handles offline queuing and deduplicates retries after failed sends. A playback reporting dashboard is planned for an upcoming release

Display API for developers also released

For developers building their own display clients beyond the Android app, we've also released the Media Display API. With four endpoints — pairing, heartbeat, playlist retrieval, and playback reporting — you can connect your own custom display client to ReceiptRoller's distribution backend.

  • Device token authentication — a long-lived token scheme for kiosk devices that don't need a browser. The server stores only the token's SHA-256 hash
  • Idempotent batch reporting — playback reports are deduplicated by a client-generated eventId, so the server automatically skips duplicates even on retries sent after coming back online
  • SAS-signed URLs — the playlist includes signed, direct-access URLs valid for one hour, so media files can't be accessed by guessing at URLs
  • API schema is backward compatible — the response formats of the existing four endpoints will not change going forward. New fields may be added, but nothing will be removed or have its type changed
  • See the Developer Help for details

What's next

In upcoming releases, we're working on a Media Display playback reporting dashboard (playback counts and completion rates by campaign, distribution status by device), making rate limits more effective (controlling how often the same creative can play in a short window), mobile support for the staff-facing communication screen, and daily/weekly graph support for the Sales API, among other improvements.
