Setting Up Location Notifications
You can set up location notifications for your Wallet membership card. When a customer comes near your store, a message such as "Stop by next time you're in the area!" or "Today's recommendation" can be shown directly on their smartphone's lock screen via Wallet. There's no need for the customer to open an app.
This article covers how location notifications work, how to set them up, tips for writing the notification message, permissions the customer needs, and usage notes.
How location notifications work
When the store registers a "store location (latitude/longitude)" and a "notification message" on the membership card, the customer's Wallet checks their location in the background and displays the notification on the lock screen when they come within a certain distance of that store.
The location check and push display are handled by Apple's / Google's system, so the relay router's servers never individually retrieve a customer's location. Privacy is preserved.
Differences between Apple Wallet and Google Wallet
| Item | Apple Wallet | Google Wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Number of locations (geofences) | Up to 10 per membership card | Up to 10 per membership card |
| Notification trigger distance | About 100m (auto-determined by the OS) | About 150m (auto-determined by the OS) |
| Display format | Preview of the Wallet card on the lock screen | Notification banner on the lock screen |
| Behavior on tap | Opens the Wallet membership card | Opens the Wallet membership card |
| Notification message | Short text shown on the front of the card | Short text shown in the notification banner |
Your store's settings are applied to both OSes with a single configuration. You don't need to enter separate messages or locations for each OS.
Items to configure
- Store location (latitude/longitude) — register per store. Entering an address automatically converts it to latitude/longitude (you can also fine-tune it manually if needed)
- Notification message — the short text shown to the customer (recommended: within 20 characters, maximum 40 characters). Longer text will be truncated
- Notification validity period (optional) — you can limit the period during which the notification is shown. Useful if you only want it to display during a campaign period
- Notification enable/disable toggle — if you want to pause notifications temporarily, you can turn them off without deleting the settings
Tips for writing the notification message
Location notifications feel to customers like "a personal message from the store." Examples of good and bad messages:
- Good: "Today's lunch service ends soon" (time-based urgency)
- Good: "20% off for members through this weekend" (a specific offer)
- Good: "Stop by if you're in the area" (a low-pressure invitation)
- Bad: "We're having a sale! Come visit!!" (feels too pushy)
- Bad: "A message from the store" (lacks specifics)
Content that offers the customer some kind of value or information is less likely to be blocked, and tends to improve open rates.
Running multiple stores
If you operate multiple stores, you can register up to 10 locations on a single membership card. For example, if you have 5 stores nationwide, registering all 5 locations means a notification is shown whenever a customer comes near any of them.
The notification message is a single message shared across all locations. You cannot display a different message per store (this limitation comes from how Apple Wallet / Google Wallet work).
Permissions the customer needs
To receive location notifications, the customer needs the following settings enabled on their end:
- iPhone: Settings → Wallet → set "Location Services" to "While Using the App" or "Always"
- Android: Settings → Apps → Google Wallet → allow "Location"
- On both OSes, the device-wide location services setting must also be turned on
The membership-card issuance flow is designed to explain that "enabling location notifications after adding to Wallet means you'll receive helpful information from the store."
Setup steps
- From the store admin screen, open "Store App" → "Membership Card" → "Location Notifications"
- Click "Add Store" and select a store (or enter an address)
- Latitude/longitude is auto-filled from the address, so fine-tune it on the map if needed
- Enter the notification message (within 20 characters recommended)
- Set a validity period (optional)
- Click "Publish" to apply it to all membership cards
Once published, existing customers' Wallet is automatically updated with the push (timing depends on Apple's / Google's delivery schedule).
Usage notes
- Because the timing of when a notification fires is determined by Apple's / Google's OS, the store cannot precisely control "notify exactly at this distance"
- Even if a customer passes by the same store multiple times in one day, OS-side throttling prevents repeated notifications within a short period (to avoid annoyance)
- Customers who haven't granted location permission won't see location notifications
- The notification message is displayed according to Wallet's styling. Some emoji or decorative characters may not display
